The Business Case for Small Talk

Small talk is not wasted time. It is the foundation on which trust is built. Here is why it matters and how to do it well.

Many professionals view small talk as an inefficiency โ€” time spent on personal pleasantries when there is business to discuss. This view misunderstands the function of small talk in professional relationships.

What Small Talk Does

Small talk establishes comfort, builds rapport, and creates the foundation of trust. Before someone will share their financial details, their real estate plans, or their business challenges, they need to feel comfortable with you as a person. Small talk is the process that creates that comfort.

The CRM Connection

The personal details that emerge from small talk โ€” a spouse's name, a child's college choice, a recent vacation, a hobby โ€” become the most valuable data in your CRM. These details enable the kind of personalized follow-up that distinguishes a good professional from a great one.

"How did your daughter's move to college go?" asked six months after a casual conversation is the kind of touchpoint that builds deep, lasting professional relationships. It is only possible if you recorded the detail when it came up in small talk.

Getting Better at Small Talk

If small talk does not come naturally, prepare. Before any meeting or event, have three open-ended questions ready: about their work, their plans, or a shared interest. Listen actively and remember (or record) the details. The goal is genuine curiosity about the other person, expressed through simple conversation.
