Using Video Messages for Personal Outreach at Scale

A 30-second video message is more personal than an email and more scalable than a phone call. Here is how to use them.

Video messages sit in a sweet spot between the personalization of a phone call and the scalability of email. A 30-second video โ€” recorded on your phone and sent via text or email โ€” takes one minute to create and feels dramatically more personal than a written message.

When Video Messages Work

  • Post-meeting follow-up โ€” "Hey Sarah, great meeting you at the event today. Wanted to follow up on what you said about [topic]..." More memorable than an email, less intrusive than a phone call.
  • Milestone congratulations โ€” A brief video congratulating a contact on a job change or achievement stands out because nobody does it.
  • Warm introductions โ€” Record a video introducing two contacts to each other. It is more personal than a three-way email and gives both parties a sense of who you are connecting them with.

Keeping It Natural

Video messages should not be polished productions. They should look like what they are: a person talking to another person on their phone. One take, natural lighting, normal voice. The imperfection is what makes it feel genuine rather than marketing.

Tracking Video Outreach

Log video messages in your CRM like any other touchpoint. Note that you sent a video, what it was about, and whether the contact responded. Over time, you will learn which contacts respond well to video and which prefer written communication.
